Which X replies are worth your time?
Reply triage 101 for founders: why notification volume kills focus, how to separate high-intent conversations from noise, and simple heuristics you can apply today.
Why reply volume kills founders
X is great for distribution and discovery — and terrible as an unfiltered inbox. Mentions, quote-posts, and reply threads stack up faster than you can thoughtfully respond. The cost isn’t just time; it’s context-switching. Every low-signal reply pulls you out of building, selling, or shipping.
Founders who “just check quickly” often end the day having answered strangers while ignoring the three people who were ready to buy, partner, or hire.
High-intent vs noise
High-intent replies usually ask a real question, share a concrete problem in your category, reference a purchase or evaluation, or open a door to a useful conversation. Noise is engagement bait, generic praise, drive-by takes, bots, and threads that go nowhere.
You don’t need a perfect scoring model. You need a bias toward conversations that move the business — and a polite way to ignore the rest.
Triage heuristics that work
- Buyer signals — Pricing questions, “looking for a tool that…”, stack mentions, “we’re evaluating X vs Y,” or “who do you recommend?”
- Real questions — Specific, answerable asks about your product, category, or how others solved a problem you know well.
- Warm intros & peers — People in your ICP, mutuals who can amplify, or operators comparing notes — high leverage even if not a sale today.
- Competitor mentions — Threads where your category is being discussed; a crisp, helpful reply can put you in the consideration set.
- Dead ends (skip) — One-word reactions, crypto spam, “follow me” loops, hot-take pile-ons, and arguments that won’t change anyone’s mind.
- Time box — Decide a daily cap (e.g. 15–20 minutes). Triage first, then reply — don’t scroll chronologically forever.
